OdataLink alternative for Xero reporting

Datplan vs OdataLink: prepared Xero reporting data or a live OData feed?

Both approaches can take Xero data into Power BI. OdataLink focuses on live OData feeds; Datplan focuses on preparing a controlled reporting copy with accounting grains, validation and local reporting.

Is Datplan an OdataLink alternative for Xero to Power BI?

Yes when the requirement is prepared, customer-controlled reporting data rather than a live OData feed. OdataLink describes itself as a secure cloud service that exposes Xero through OData and works with Power BI Desktop and Online. Datplan instead pulls supported Xero data into the customer’s Windows environment, performs ETL and builds reporting-ready facts and dimensions.

Best fitTeams wanting the reporting copy prepared in their Windows environment with local/offline optionsTeams wanting a cloud OData feed, broad Xero endpoint access and template-led reporting

Choose OdataLink when a live OData feed is the better fit

  • You want to use Power BI’s native OData Feed connector.
  • You want OdataLink’s broad Xero endpoint catalogue.
  • You want its published templates/tutorials and multi-organisation features.
  • You prefer a cloud service with no Datplan-style desktop processing stage.

Choose Datplan when the prepared reporting copy is the better fit

  • You want extraction and ETL inside your Windows environment.
  • You want financial summary, activity, invoice, line and payment grains kept distinct.
  • You want local Datplan dashboards, offline reporting and Audit Analytics.
  • You want the option to keep reporting local or publish it to a location you control.
  • You prefer a completed reporting snapshot that does not query Xero every time a report is viewed.

Different strengths

OdataLink is stronger on live OData; Datplan is stronger on customer-controlled preparation

This is not a “one product wins everything” comparison. The correct choice depends on whether the main requirement is a live feed or a prepared reporting layer.

Datplan’s advantage is not that cloud services are inherently unsafe. It is that the reporting workflow does not require another Datplan-hosted copy of the business data. If you later choose OneDrive, SharePoint or another shared destination, that is your deliberate storage decision.

Decision checklist

Questions to ask before choosing OdataLink or Datplan

Do you want Power BI to request Xero data through OData?

OdataLink is purpose-built for that pattern. Its public documentation shows the native Power BI OData Feed route, broad endpoint access and live/on-demand refresh model. If that is the architecture you want, OdataLink is a strong fit.

Do you want a prepared reporting snapshot first?

Datplan deliberately inserts a reporting-preparation stage between Xero and Power BI. The completed dataset can be reviewed, used by Datplan dashboards, exported and reported on offline without making every report view another live Xero request.

Do templates and multi-organisation reporting matter?

OdataLink publishes templates and advertises multi-organisation/consolidation capabilities. Current released Datplan does not claim automatic accounting consolidation. A buyer who needs those OdataLink capabilities today should treat that as a genuine advantage.

Do you want the reporting copy inside infrastructure you control?

Datplan processes the source data in the customer’s Windows environment and does not require a Datplan-hosted reporting database. The organisation can keep completed reporting local or deliberately publish it to a shared location of its choice.

Live access is not automatically more accurate

Freshness and accounting correctness are separate. A live OData feed can provide current rows, but the model still needs correct relationships, measures and period logic. Datplan’s approach trades live querying for a prepared, reviewable reporting layer.

Comparison evidence

Sources reviewed 6 September 2026

OdataLink’s current public pages describe a secure cloud OData v4 service with Power BI Desktop/Online compatibility. They also describe a live Xero link, encrypted caching, 70+ Xero endpoints and multi-organisation reporting. Datplan statements are limited to its current released reporting workflow.
